How To Steep Tea

Learning how to properly steep tea is essential to enjoying each cup to its fullest. Oftentimes when I hear someone say they don’t like tea, I’ve found that it wasn’t prepared properly. Over steeped black tea can taste bitter, and the leaves in green and white teas can be easily burned drastically changing their intended flavors. While herbal teas are more flexible in how long you steep them, there are still some general guidelines to follow to help you get the most flavor out of your tea. If you are new to tea, this can seem overwhelming and like too much to remember, so we’ve provided this quick guide to help you get started!


When steeping loose leaf tea the general rule is 1 teaspoon for every 6 oz of hot water. It’s best to use a tea strainer that has a large cage and a fine mesh. While tea balls are common, they tend to leak, and they prevent the leaves from fully unfurling which can affect the flavor.
